From April 13 through May 19, 2023, the Espace VERRE gallery will present La certitude de l’écho an exhibition featuring the works of Caroline Ouellette. The theme of the exhibition was ignited from the term [Stargazer] used when a baby is positioned with its back to the mother’s spine during childbirth, a poetic way of suggesting that it will be a difficult delivery. For this exhibition, Caroline Ouellette created seven new conceptual works and installations using the casting, blowing and kiln working glass techniques. Following a creative break of a few years, the artist trusted her intuition and followed her star. The echo became certainty (L’écho est devenu sa certitude) over the course of exploration.
“The echo reverberates the noises sent to it. The ultrasound, the image of what is present.“
Caroline Ouellette’s work embraces the stress of glass considering that it is a fragile and resistant material. Her artistic approach transfers the two-poles of the material metaphorically making them resonate within each other. She creates works that are always anchored in the senses and invites the spectator to experience and contemplate her work through their own senses. Here she invites the public to follow her into a universe that is both mysterious and fascinating:
“To Propel oneself blindly obliges the nebulous. I star gazed, followed the fireflies. With the certainty of the echo buried deep in my pocket, I threw myself into the
sidereal void.“
Caroline Ouellette has worked with glass since 1996. In 2002, she completed the collegial fine craft-glass option programme at Espace Verre. In 2004, she co-founded the Welmo glass studio with Patrick Primeau. Since then, she has had numerous solo and group exhibitions. Her works are included in many private and public collections, including the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Canada Council Art Bank. In 2014, she received a PhD in glass art from the University of South Australia in Adelaide. Currently, she teaches Synthesis Activity III and End-of-studies project to the 3rd year students of Espace VERRE. La certitude de l’écho is Caroline Ouellette’s first solo exhibition at Espace VERRE.
