Closing Reception on February 1, 2018, at 6 p.m.
Montreal, January 9, 2018 – From January 15 to February 2, 2018, the Espace VERRE Gallery presents Je fonds, tu fonds, ils fondent, an exhibition featuring the recent works of Jean-François Boivin, 2016 laureate of the Houdé-Mendel Bursary. A closing reception will be held in presence of the artist on Thursday, February 1st, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The rebellious nature of JF Boivin wants to maintain his glass square and sharp, all the while submitting it to intensive and repeated firing. In his works, the usually fluid material yields an intermittence of rocky or devitrified phases, creating a dance or combat within the pieces. Moreover, he chooses to incorporate 3D-printed elements to his work, a practice that enables him to enrich and interpret the glass’ intention that is progressively revealed after each firing. While his glass has become wild and unbridled, the 3D-printed elements are constrained by strict regulations. Boivin uses the plastic material to create a connection with his glass work, and then enjoys exacerbating an existing discord, creating a new discourse, or simply setting a stage for his untamed glass.
The Houdé-Mendel Bursary
Following François Houdé’s last wishes, this bursary was created in 1996 in coalition with the Montreal glass collectors Anna and Joseph Mendel. This annual juried bursary permits its laureate the use of the Houdé-Mendel kiln for six months.
