From February 16 through March 31, 2023, the Espace VERRE gallery will present Dentelles de soi a solo exhibition featuring the works of Lisanne Lachance. Laces of glass and of light, objects simultaneously delicate and solid, crystallised by a sensual and poignant delicacy. Dentelles de soi is an ode to the multiple facets of her identity as a woman and a declaration of her choice of being a visual artist that loves fine crafts; of deciding to not abandon technique over the profit of an idea. With this exhibition, the artist presents a selection of recent and retrospective works with the idea of declaring herself both a “woman artist” and a “contemporary craftswoman”. More recently, with her stained glass prisms, Lisanne Lachance began to explore a new visual language through coldworking glass techniques such as polishing and engraving. Although from a radically different aesthetic than her glass lacework, these processes allow her to further explore the questions relating to identity while incorporating the notion of perception.

Lisanne Lachance’s work is a hymn to motherhood, to the seductress, to the saint, to all the witches in this world; a homage to the unconscious power they possess. The artist must create, transform, give life to material and stage it. Through this, the artist observes the theater of her life. Semantically speaking, Lisanne Lachance is particularly interested in the identity and evolution of the feminine condition through time. The observation of the collective identity of a gender through transference or the rejection of values. She associates this process with her relationship with procreation and with the feeling of being able to create what she feels physically, artistically, and biologically. In all cases, it is a question of imprint and of memories, of self-construction and fulfillment. Because each thing and being in this world has its place and its trace to leave behind. And through self-representations that take various forms, she hopes that her own is a luminous and colorful array.

Lisanne Lachance began her visual arts studies at the Collège Lionel-Groulx, as well as at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Fascinated by artistic expression through technical skill rather than conceptuality, she gravitated to the fine craft glass option program whose technical classes are offered at Espace VERRE. Since graduating in 2012, she has received many honorary distinctions, including an important research grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and she gained recognition by participating in many exhibitions. Since 2014, she teaches cold glass techniques to the 1st-year students of the fine craft glass option programme of the Cégep du Vieux Montréal. Dentelles de soi is her second solo exhibition.

Espace VERRE is a glass creativity centre located at 1200 Mill Street in Montreal. The gallery is open for visits Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as the last Sunday of every month, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
