From April 14 through May 20, 2022, the Espace VERRE gallery will present Mirari  an exhibition featuring the works of Jean-Simon Trottier. As in the mythology of Narcissus, the human first discovered himself/herself for the first time by observing his/her reflection in a pool of water. Like in the 19th century, the artist uses the silvering on glass technique by chemically depositing thin layers of silver onto glass to create a mirrored effect. A real visual delight, his presented works catch the eye into an infinite space of a thousand images. The vernissage will take place in the presence of the artist on Thursday, April 14 at 6 p.m.

Mirari (Latin for the word mirror) is a place where the image presents itself and changes accordingly to the rhythm of steps and movements. The important optical and aesthetic effects─ created by playing with the various thicknesses, colors, facets and angles of glass─ magnify the gallery. The spectator is immersed by an innovative glass work; bearer of a vibrant and reflective sensitivity. The artist creates sculptures and installations that find their source in the heart of existing forms in nature. He juxtaposes the elegance of blown glass with a mirroring effect that was obtained following research. Since a few years now, the glass artist has been experimenting with the composition and the process of applying the chemical solutions required for silvering on glass. Recipient of a grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, he found a way to produce his own silvered glass with local resources. Therefore, the artist seeks to continue and master this fascinating knowhow through technical exploration.

Jean-Simon Trottier lives and works in Montréal. In 2002, he graduated from the fine craft, glass option programme offered by Espace VERRE in collaboration with the Cégep du Vieux Montréal. Following this, he enrolled in many professional workshops. Jean-Simon Trottier is recognized by his peers, for the excellence of his glassblowing technical skills and the ingenuity of his work. Since 2011, he teaches glassblowing to Espace VERRE’s student. Mirari is his second solo exhibition.

Espace VERRE is a glass creativity centre located at 1200 Mill Street in Montreal. The gallery is open for visits Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as the last Sunday of every month, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
