Vernissage on February 15, 2018, at 6 p.m.

From February 15 through March 30, 2018, the Espace VERRE Gallery presents Connectivity, an exhibition featuring the latest explorations of Carole Frève. An opening reception will be held in the presence of the artist on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Carole Frève‘s work has always combined two major axes: for one, she is constantly researching new ways to combine glass and copper, all the while focusing on the narrative side of her pieces. Her latest explorations stem from an intuitive thought: what if an electric current circulated through the copper plating, thus becoming a circuit? From this new approach, the artist wishes to initiate a dialogue between her work and the public, in hopes that the story is no longer transmitted solely by the work, but rather ready to form a new one with its interlocutor. By adding sensors, LEDs, integrated circuits, and other electronic components, she wants to establish a playful yet sensitive relationship between her works and their public. This technology is added in symbiosis with her glass, resulting in aesthetically-pleasing creations that possess a definite power of attraction.

The Connectivity exhibition itself is also interactive: the show is an invitation to follow the artist in the meanders of creation through her work process, from the idea to the finished product. Come warm your hands around a glass log that will light up on contact. Touch the wings of an angel to make its heart beat. Move a chair and initiate a sunrise… The boundary between fine craft skills and new technologies is Frève’s playing field. Furthermore, as in a laboratory, her latest research advancements will be shown in rotation within a dynamic space dedicated to her most-recent discoveries.

Espace VERRE is a glass art creativity and diffusion centre located at 1200 Mill Street in Montreal. The gallery is open from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as the last Sunday of every month from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free of charge.

The artist wishes to thank the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec as well as the Canada Council for the Arts, whose contributions made this research possible.
