Opening Reception June 1, 2017, 6 p.m.

Montreal, May 16, 2017 – From June 1 to September 8, 2017, the Espace VERRE gallery presents POÍÊSIS, an exhibition featuring the works of the three 2017 graduates of the Fine Craft – glass option program, offered in collaboration with the Cégep du Vieux Montréal. Aside of being a lyrical and etymological reference to the term poesy, the title of the show was inspired by its Ancient Greek roots: the act of making; creation. The vernissage will be in the presence of the artists Svetlana Blanchon, Dylan Duchet and Maroussia Zimmer on Thursday, June 1, at 6 p.m.

Svetlana Blanchon
holds great admiration for the opulent ornamentation of the oriental countries she visited with her family. These childhood trips awakened a longing for significant interactions with people of various cultures. Today, her works demonstrate her desire to honour artisanal traditions from across the globe. For POÍÊSIS, Blanchon was inspired by the moucharaby latticework patterns found in the windows of Islamic architecture, which offer protection from the sun, but also allow visibility without being seen. Through the shadow and light optical effects provided by glass, one can escape to foreign places along with her.

Influenced by forms and textures found in nature, Dylan Duchet merges images inspired by terrestrial landscapes with his own graphic style. His artistic universe is influenced by Greek mythology, where a fragile thread symbolizes human life. Affected by other people’s ordeals, dramas, and fears, Duchet uses graphic lifelines to tell the tales of some of their destinies.  With Oscillation of Ananke and Chronos, the analogy is quite clear: the two parts of the elements of the work are diametrically opposed. The fluidity of the outward-facing side is harmonious – soft, clear and open to the world–, while its inner facet leans towards dissension, sombre yet elegant in its introverted expression.

Maroussia Zimmer takes great pleasure in anatomically and anthropologically analyzing the human type. For her, the interaction and shared moments with others are as important in the creative process as is the interpretation of the rhetoric. Glass not only allows her to physically realize her subject, but also to transpose emotions and to highlight qualities as well as vices. In her series Another brick in the wall? Zimmer explores universal ideas, such as the loss of innocence and the touching naivety of youth, to finally carry out a very personal quest. The outcome of this research, Sortez-moi de moi, is a real emancipation from the opinion of others, as to fully emerge, faithful to herself.

Espace VERRE is a glass art school and creativity centre located at 1200 Mill Street in Montreal. The gallery is open from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as the last Sunday of every month from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
