Meet the artists on September 22 at 6 p.m.

Montreal, September 6, 2016 – From September 15 to October 7, 2016, the Espace VERRE Gallery presents Monologue en double file, an exhibition featuring the recent works of Chloé Charette, 2015 laureate of the Houdé-Mendel Bursary, and Barbara Renault, winner of the 2015 Edgerley-Robertson Award. An evening meeting with the artists will be held on Thursday, September 22, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Chloé Charette‘s Conversations silencieuses emerged from the desire to slow down time, while applying oneself to create impeccable work. In the era of smart phones and social media, the artist deplores the deprivation of human contact and the rarity of face-to-face interactions. Each work of her series is a conversation in itself, where the effect obtained with the pâte de verre technique alludes to an apparent clarity of our impersonal communications, where silence is required to appreciate body language.

On the other side of the looking glass, Barbara Renault integrates kiln-worked pieces to her frequently satirical installations, where the subject matter dictates the form. Nevertheless, glass is the true protagonist of her theatrical works, featuring found objects and sculpted elements whose main objective is to engross the onlooker into her magical world. Fringing the strange, she tells us stories on life and death – tales of enchanted forests, captured animals, belly buttons and ovaries, which pique our twisted curiosity.

The Houdé-Mendel Bursary
Following François Houdé’s last wishes, this bursary was created in 1996 in coalition with the Montreal glass collectors Anna and Joseph Mendel. This annual juried bursary permits its laureate the use of the Houdé-Mendel kiln for six months.

The Edgerley-Robertson Award
Created by glass artists Susan Edgerley and Donald Robertson, the Edgerley-Robertson Award is offered to an Espace VERRE graduate to encourage innovation, intuition, exploration, research, discovery and poetry for kiln cast work. The award allows the use of the Houdé-Mendel kiln for six months.

Espace VERRE
Espace VERRE is a glass art creativity centre located at 1200 Mill Street in Montreal. The gallery is open from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as the last Sunday of every month, from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free of charge.

The artists and Espace VERRE offer their innermost gratitude to Anna and Joe Mendel, as well as to Susan Edgerley and Donald Robertson, for their generous support of the emerging glass artists of Quebec.
